Funding boost to advance SiPHyR hydrogen project

1414 Degrees’ proprietary SiPHyR™ (Storage integrated Pyrolytic Hydrogen Reactor) technology has received a significant funding boost, with the award of a $492,526 Australia’s Economic Accelerator (AEA) Ignite grant to support its next phase of development.

SiPHyR is designed to produce low-cost turquoise hydrogen and valuable solid carbon co-products from methane pyrolysis. The innovative technology combines 1414 Degrees’ high-temperature silicon-based thermal energy storage with advanced reactor design to deliver clean hydrogen without carbon dioxide emissions, while creating a new supply of carbon-based feedstocks.

The funding, provided under the AEA Ignite program, will accelerate the development of second-generation catalystsfor the SiPHyR process. These next-generation catalysts are designed to improve hydrogen yields and allow carbon co-products to be tailored to meet specific market demands – building on earlier catalyst and reactor development to improve performance, stability and commercial viability.

The AEA Ignite grant builds on the momentum of the $5.2 million CRC‑P supported project, announced in February 2024, which is delivering further development of SiPHyR in collaboration with the University of Adelaide, Woodside Energy, RMIT and Vulcan Steel. More on that announcement can be found here.

SiPHyR is a central part of 1414 Degrees’ strategy to decarbonise natural gas on-stream, offering a practical, cost-competitive, low-emissions hydrogen production solution that leverages existing gas infrastructure while creating new revenue streams from carbon co-products. The technology is targeted at hard-to-abate industrial sectors, including iron and steel, cement and manufacturing.

Executive Chairman Dr Kevin Moriarty said:

“This grant highlights the Government’s recognition of our SiPHyR technology’s potential to deliver a commercially viable, low-emissions hydrogen solution for Australian industry. By combining innovative catalyst research with our proven silicon-based energy storage, SiPHyR can reduce emissions from existing gas networks while creating valuable carbon-based materials for new markets. We look forward to working with our partners to advance this important technology.”

The milestone‑based AEA Ignite funding reinforces government and industry confidence in the technology and strengthens 1414 Degrees’ pathway to commercialise SiPHyR as a practical, scalable solution for decarbonising hard‑to‑abate industries such as steel, cement and manufacturing.

Project partners progress innovative hydrogen tech

Project partners progress innovative hydrogen tech

Project partners in 1414 Degrees’ SiPHyR™ programme gathered for a milestone technical workshop early this month, to progress the company’s innovative hydrogen production technology.

Meeting at 1414 Degrees’ Adelaide facility, they discussed the state of the art SiPHyR (Storage-integrated Pyrolytic Hydrogen Reactor) technology which aims to produce  low-emissions hydrogen from methane at a price competitive CO2 generating blue hydrogen processes.   The technology is designed to achieve this by using renewable-sourced heat supplied by 1414 Degrees’ patented silicon-based thermal energy storage technology.

The meeting brought together representatives from Woodside Energy Technologies Pty Ltd, the University of Adelaide, and RMIT with 1414 Degrees staff to review recent development milestones and coordinate the next phase of the project.

1414 Degrees staff reported achievement over 30% methane conversion in tests with catalysts at 1000°C, with hydrogen concentrations exceeding 50% in the exhaust stream—providing valuable insight into the reactor’s expected performance.

The SiPHyR Stage 1 prototype reactor is currently undergoing pre-commissioning testing and remains on track to commence operation by the end of June 2025.

1414 Degrees has been innovating to fill key industry gaps for its SiPHyR technology. These gaps arise because there are no commercially available solutions currently capable of withstanding extreme conditions of high temperature pyrolysis. The Company has invented proprietary technologies to enable continuous monitoring of molten catalyst levels and a ceramic-based gas sparging system—both critical to ensuring safe and efficient reactor operation.

These will be integrated into the SiPHyR Stage 1 prototype reactor now undergoing pre-commissioning testing and formed key discussion points during the workshop.

The in-person meeting provided an opportunity for the consortium to align integration plans and research priorities as the project advances toward its first operational milestone.

Further updates will be provided as the project progresses.

India visit establishes potential business partnerships

India visit establishes potential business partnerships

Our Commercial Manager, Dr Jason Chaffey and Chief Technology Officer, Dr Mahesh Venkataraman recently returned from a trip to India where they showcased our energy storage capabilities to a select group of potential business partners.

Meeting with multinational service providers and a smaller industrial services provider, the two learned more about India’s energy market, industrial processes and the drivers for uptake of clean-energy and heat solutions.

In contrast to some other nations, uptake of these solutions is driven purely by economics, but the Indian government is increasingly installing renewables.

There are no industrial gas users in India (unlike the Australian market), with thermal generators – primarily coal-fired power plants – meeting requirements.

These thermal generators cannot respond quickly to control signals to change their output, and 1414 Degrees thermal energy storage solutions may provide a way to address fluctuating needs.

The trip resulted in the identification of multiple potential applications for 1414 Degrees technology – with the company and other parties agreeing to share additional information to determine the compatibility of our solutions, with specific customer requirements.

Discussions also indicated we have significant potential to establish partnerships with companies in India to licence our solutions.

In-market connections with respected industrial service providers are important, as the Indian market is known for its strong pull-through, meaning: if one company adopts a technology, and it proves economical, then adoption will be rapid.

We look forward to continuing these relationships, to help implement our technologies in industries around the world.
